I retract that statement. It was based on the incorrect assumption that
python and php choose between alternatives the same way POSIX does. As per
my recent emails to the mailing list, that assumption is false; they try
the alternatives in order.

This makes POSIX EREs and perl/python/php REs fundamentally different when
alternatives are used within a repetition, and nobody should expect to see
the same behaviour for patterns such as "([ab]{6}|a)*?b".
