If anyone uses GIMP to amend their screenshots can they please let me know
how you draw an ellipse round a certain area in your screenshot. I've been
playing around with GIMP for the past hour and am still struggling to find
this feature. The help file to me is useless!
If this is the image tool of choice, has anyone got a quick reference guide
for it, or can they point me to one on the GIMP website, so it doesn't take
hours to find out how to use the usual features writers would use e.g. crop,
sharpen/blur, draw lines/ellipses, drop shadows/blurred borders (if we use
them to give a "microsoft" feel. I haven't seen any in the pdfs or on wiki
yet)
Ellipses and circles are a pain to draw in The Gimp if you don't know
what tools to use. The docs describe two ways to do this:
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-ellipse-select.html

The trick is to to make a circular/ellipse selection using the ellipse
select tool, then turn that into a line. So.. use the ellipse selection
tool (it's in the toolbar) and draw your ellipse. Then Click Edit>
Stroke Selection. Set the line width (eg 1px) and other options as you
need and click OK. You should have an ellipse now.

Hello Claire,

I normally use Gimp only to convert the screenshot into a bitmap (.png) that I then import in Draw/Impress to add shapes. I find Gimp's learning curve too steep though I can now manage to create some decent images and basic photo retouching.

What I know about using Gimp comes from following tutorials. Here are some of my bookmarks tagged with Gimp:

Cheers,

Michele
