Worked fine for me on WinXP when I opened the file directly in OOo3.2.1

fonts? I thought they were installed with OOo, but perhaps they were
not. If that's not the problem, then I'm totally out of ideas. I hope
someone else knows something more useful than I do.

the docs

I can only think of two possibilities.

The first one shouldn't happen, but it's easy to check. Look at Tools > Options > Load/Save > General, and check that the format box shows "ODF 1.2 (Recommended)", which it should by default.

The second problem involves two or more CPUs (I never saw it on my previous, one-core model). Writer takes time to do its initial layout, but on a dual-core system, the document looks ready to go immediately. On my WV system, I use the Google CPU-meter gadget, and wait until it quits bouncing around before doing *anything* to the document. On a chapter-size document, this may take 60 - 90 seconds.
