Jean, I think this is an excellent idea and encourage you to do it. It's something Clayton and I have been intending to do but we never find time and I at least have been on the project so long that I often don't think of the right questions to answer. Also, the documentation project has been undergoing restructuring for the past year or two (moving things to the wiki and making other changes), so the available info tends to be scattered and contradictory... as you have probably noticed. I think the project is settling down enough that writing it down now might help all of us including the old-timers to see where further decisions and improvements need to be made. Thank you for taking on this much-needed effort! I will certainly help as much as I can, though I'll be available only intermittently for another two weeks.
