Hey everyone - sorry far taking so long to give you all an update on OOoCon
2010. I've been a bit busy at work and at home since I traveled back from Budapest.
Budapest was an interesting place to hold the conference this year. The city is
a place full of contrasts.... very poor run-down areas, next to beautifully
restored classic "old-world" buildings.... beat up old Trabants driving down the
street next to Lamborghinis... modern sculptures and statues next to statues
from the Communist era. All in it's a very interesting city, and well worth a
visit.
The conference was held in the Central European University campus in the city
center (Pest side of the river). The rooms we had for the presentations were
excellent, and the conference itself went quite smoothly (at least from my
perspective). A great job by all who worked hard to make it happen.
The Documentation Project presentation was held at 16:00 on Wednesday, and was
quite well attended. The presentation covered the usual intro topics that I've
covered in previous years... a restatement of the general goals of the project
and a few words about where we are in terms of tooling, and recently published
documents, and projects etc.
From there I turned the focus towards the most recent topic... how we can bring
all our new members up to speed, make it a lot more clear what needs to be done,
and bring the new members onboard a lot smoother. A few ideas were discussed
during and after the presentation... but no one had any earthshattering
solutions :-) it's definitely something we need to work on to make sure we
don't lose the people who are interested in helping out with one or more aspects
of the existing documentation.
Another topic that was discussed was translations. We've got a huge group of
people who are busy translating the documents into their local languages - in
particular, the Russians and Brazilians are working hard on getting as much
documentation into their respective languages as they can. The problem is..
how... how do they translate the documents and keep the translated version
somewhat in sync with the English source?
So, where next? Good question, and I'll take that up in another email or two...
