This messed-up layout in your screen-shot looks very familiar: it usually happens when the user opens a substantial document, then tries to start using it (editing or just scrolling or jumping through it) before Writer is finished with the layout process. Worse, Writer doesn't show anything to say when it's really ready.

The usual workaround is to close and reopen the document, /waiting/ for signs of "no life" :-) before doing anything with it. On my dual-core WV system, I run the Google CPU meter gadget, and wait until the needle stops twitching. --/tj/
