I think that's an unnecessary restriction. It could be problematic if I write a chapter using Solaris and Sigrid wants to translate it, but only has Windows.
And there is no real benefit to it. The user gains *nothing* from it. If a German user is reading the chapter, why would he care if the screenshots look the same as those in an English document?
If you use in the translation screenshots of a different operating system you have to modify the corresponding text....
All the instructions should be exactly the same. This is a very important premise fo OOo. The menu paths are the same, the dialogs are the same, etc. A Windows user should be able to use my styles chapter (written with Solaris) just as easily as anyone.
If this is not true, there is a *big* *problem*. It means some one at OOo made a huge mistake.
The rules for new (!) Dokuments in the Germanphone Section should be the same as rules for the English guides.
Why? Just asking. You are free to do whatever works best for you. I report on what we do, but you can make different choices.
OK! I think the way you did it on your Draw Guide is a good choise :-) an the easier solution! In my mind we have two possibilities:
1. A translation (only translate text and replace the screenshots with the same operating system)
2. A 'new' document (translate and modify text, structure and screenhots with a notice like 'this document based on ....'
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think this are general rules for translation of documents.
Ah... I see what you mean now. I think I understand. The word "translation" means that it has to look the same. Hhhmm... in that case, I would say that translations are not very important. And that what matters is that you make a new document that works well for you.
That's how we did our Draw Guide. It began as a French document, which we translated to English. And then we changed everything :-)
Cheers,
In some cases eg. documents those are partly out of time like

a simple translation is not very useful.
