Yes, the day is called "Aprils Fools". It's also a tradition in North 
America, France, and a few other places. There is a similar one in 
Venezuela, but it's on a differentday.

April Fools is the most popular holiday in the Open Source world.

A couple of years ago Linus Torvalds said he was going to quit the Linux 
kernel. He said "I was happy until you guys took my hobby and turned it 
into a world movement".  :-)
