As a second-language reader, I have never found this to be a problem. And incidentally, I happen to prefer Canadian spelling :-) My motto is "let's put the 'u' back in 'colour'" :-) he he he.
But in any event, I know more non-native speakers than natives, and I haven't yet heard that complaint. Okay, my dad doesn't get why "centre" is pronounced as it is, but that's a different matter.
