[I'll top post this because of the difficulty of following the sequence below... ]

DocBook 5 (probably already "officially" out by now) is not expected to be 100% backwards compatible with DocBook 4.5 due to its shift to NG.

It would be beneficial to have more central documentation about XML at OOo instead of having to hunt for it around forums or various (inactive?) projects.

One rub is that our doc teams also seem to be "low activity" in some of the more difficult or esoteric areas concerning OOo.

It's fine and well that Writer does DocBook XML 4.1.2. However, using it for one without some prior experience will result in XML files of ODT authoring that has an overabundance of Para elements where one would expect Sections, etc. So, for a rank beginner, some knowledge gained of this via OOo documentation about incorporating Heading and custom styles (for those extra Para elements) would be beneficial.

Adobe (FrameMaker7.x) over the years has been fairly good in its providing hundreds of pages of XML documentation. Knowing that it'll be around for a while because of its newly released FM8 will probably attract and siphon off users from both OOo and MSO.

I'll check out the simplified DB once it's based on DB5.

Just in case Simplified DocBook is of any interest, here is what I got from their email list:

Hi JC,

I can certainly bring this up at the next TC meeting.

Norm has created some DocBook NG versions of Simplified in the past (see http://docbook.org/docbook-ng/simple/), so it should be fairly straightforward to create the next version based on the official DocBook v5.

The transition guide (http://www.docbook.org/docs/howto/) should apply for Simplified docs, too.

I would imagine that the 1.2 release would be based on NG (5.0) rather than 4.5 at this point.

Best regards,

Hi Jean,

the current official release is 1.1. There is also a 1.2CR1, based on DocBook 4.5, but we have not taken it further. I would anticipate providing a newer version based on DocBook v5.0, once it is officially released.

Thank you Scott. I saw that info on the page but I asked since nothing new seemed to be happening on that front.
So, we'd have a new CR based on DB 5.0 in the near future ?
How compatible would that one be with the 1.1 version ? And would the 1.2 version still be released in the end ?

So since Docbook is so profuse, using OOo for this XML DTD would

What about using "Simplified DocBook" ? I am talking about authoring OOo documentation, not about DocBook authoring in OOo in general, of course.

Simplified DocBook is based on DocBook 4.5 and is "suited to articles about computer hardware and software (though it is by no means limited to these applications)."

The previous version was based on DocBook 4.3
