I read the shell scripts "all the time", and don't recall seeing any useful comments (neither mine nor the autoconf distribution, ;-) I'm there to trace scripts that aren't working properly, so the only useful information is the variables and their substitution. Useful comments are those in the usage section of the macros -- outside their definition.
