I see one possibility - perhaps you have an error in your configure.ac script. If you mistakenly omit a newline after the use of an error-inducing construct, as in: AS_ERROR([message])dnl something then that would result in: as_fn_error "message" "$LINENO" 5something and since "5something" is not an integer, that would explain the syntax error.
