One hurdle that people may want to keep in mind, especially if they're
not used to working with GNU projects, is that non-trivial changes
require copyright assignment paperwork (and from your employer if you
have certain types of agreements in your employment contract).

This can often take time so if you're interested in getting involved
it's better to think about this sooner rather than later.
