   Savannah, rather than just a glorified branch in the Automake Git

No no, that will only let things drift apart more quickly.  While
everything is still in one head (yours), it should be in one repo, IMHO.

Perhaps you should post a "help wanted" notice, select a worthy hacker
for Automake (presuming you want to focus on Automake-NG) from the
throng of candidates (one hopes), and then, after a suitable ramp-up
period, let the new maintainer decide the fate of the code.
