earlier in the thread ``Lars J. Aas'' stated that -q on IRIX make
means quiet.  i've just checked that an this is wrong (Lars also
posted a message correcting this).  this was a false alarm (at
least for IRIX).  so if nobody else knows some alien make which
does something strange for -q ...
