If you want to base a new macro upon AM_PATH_GTK*, try AC_PATH_LIB: http://ac-archive.sourceforge.net/rleigh/ac_path_lib.html which is a generic version of the same (though heavily developed since!). You can easily wrap it with a custom macro that expands this with some specific arguments. It also has companion macros: http://ac-archive.sourceforge.net/rleigh/ac_config_libconfig_in.html http://ac-archive.sourceforge.net/rleigh/ac_config_pkgconfig_in.html to generate -config script and pkg-config templates, respectively. However... the world has since moved to pkg-config, making these obsolete (thank goodness--they were a nightmare to debug!).
