A similar problem was reported when the bootstrap script was run
unnecessarily.
This is recommended by some people in Debian but I'm skeptical that
it's a good thing,
Fully agreed with your skepticism :).
Version 1.4.20 of m4 in Debian will not use autoreconf, and I think
it will be reproducible because I've already tested it.
Excellent. I think I'm going to revert the change in mdate-sh and push
out a bug-fix release of automake asap (several days at best).
