I have seen traces of "CCASFLAGS" in automake, so I guess someone thought of
that already. And that would speak towards getting a CCLDFLAGS variable.
I second the motion. Then the community can start towards paying down
the enormous technical debt that has accumulated from conflating that
into LDFLAGS.
