If you read developing with Avalon very closely you will find it has everything you need to know. Good places to study examples are in the cornerstone demo apps. Remember the difference between the 'Developing with Avalon' and the cornerstone demos: in the demos the components are managed by Phoenix, in the Dev Guide they are managed by the developer.
