likely solutions:

- throw the javascript out of the window

- throw css/xhtml/<div>/<span> out of the window

- throw yourself out of the window (when you do try to make it work and
fail)

If you do want to try just for fun, get yourself NS4.01, NS4.05,NS4.07,
NS4.5.1, NS4.5.4+, NS4.7+, NS6, Mozilla1, IE4.0, IE4.0.forgotwhichone,
IE4.5, IE5, IE5.01, IE5.5, IE6, Konqueror2.x, Konqueror3.x, Galeon2.x,
links, all on windows, mac and linux where applicable (they're all
different) and an audio-browser-for-the-visually-impaired machine.

You need to test each change against all of them, and make sure you load
both from local disk and a website, and hit refresh using both soft and
hard refresh every time.
