I just found it in the FAQ (first item), it says to run configure without
--enable-release, which is added to CFLAGS by the build script of the spec file.
It also says to get rid of any -O options, and I can't see where that is being
set, but the command line seems to have it. I'm recompiling it without
--enable-release right now.
