Had the same problem with GeForce MX (same versions of SDL, XFree86 &
NVIDIA_GLX).
A tip from the SDL home page worked for me: setting the environment
variable
export SDL_VIDEO_X11_NODIRECTCOLOR=1
made it possible to create a hardware accelerated overlay.
