Do you have proper rights on dirs/files?
ls -ld avifile-0.6; ls -l avifile-0.6/mkinstalldirs
Try ,,automake -a -c -v'' manually.

./autogen.sh _is not_ for users, so there is no need to keep some ugly
backward compatibility.. It's for developers but since releases are
very rare then many users uses autogen.sh.
