I'm not sure what is the reason for this problem - but

ln -s /bin/true ltconfig

in avifile-0.6 directory seems to resolve this problem - but
if someone has such system and is either able to track this problem down
or would like to allow me to figure out the reason for this
that would be helpful.

For now I could only say that your system probably contains some wierd
mixture of files as a result of some upgrades and libtoolize creates
some invalid configure files - the solution might be to use CVS snaphost
which have configure files already generated.
