NanDub is in my eyes very poor software it's able to produce highly
damadged avi streams with repeated frames

Hmm unsure which version do you mean ? 
Aviplay should play nearly every damaged files you could find.
I think I do rememeber that some very old version has been stuck in the
deadlock when parsing some stream info - but this was some old version.

Assumming you wouldn't be reporting bug if you would have used the
latest released CVS snapshot version would you ?
