Summary: Sound fails

Initial Comment:
I am running linux kernel 2.4.7-10 on a dell inspiron
2500. Here is a summary of all the problems I've had
with avifile:

-Sound cuts off at random times on some avi files.
-Sound cuts off whenever the scrollbar is moved.
-Sound sometimes won't play at all for some files.
-I have not been able to watch a complete avi file
*ever* because of one of the above three bugs
occurring.
-Aviplay sometimes stops responding if one of the above
errors occurs, forcing me to kill the application.
-When any of the above errors occur, avifile will
not play sound until the system is rebooted.
-Playback is abnormally fast on many avi files (e.g.
 grown men sound like chipmunks.

Debugging info:
-Upon one of the above errors happening, the kernel
displays the following message upon rebooting:

i810: drain_dac, dma timeout?

-Here is the complete terminal output from Avifile from
one of the sound crashes:

Please, does anyone have the slightest idea what could
be going wrong? I may have to switch back to windoze if
I can't play my video files, and I *do not* want to do
that. :)
Thanks everyone!
