How did you set the mixer? It is there where you select the sound input
for recording. You can set this with any mixer gui, eg. gmix.
aumix -q gives you a listing, mine looks like this:

The sound recording input is 'line' here, indicated by the 'P', this
is the internal connector from TV card to the sound card.

If I set the rec input with gmix to, say, my cdrom, I would always
record sound from my CD when I really wanted to record a movie...
