Actually, SDL-devel was not installed.  I installed all packages included
with Mandrake which include the string "SDL" just to make certain none were
missed (several including "devel", and deleted my entire AVIfile source
tree, just to make certain NOTHING was left of what I'd been doing.  I
redownloaded via CVS, and made another attempt, but got the same error.
Running sdl-config returns syntax information, so I assume  SDL is all set,
and the config file that the error mentions is right where the error told me
to look for it (not that I'd know how to edit it, although I shouldn't need
to, as I've never moved SDL, which is what the message implies may be the
issue.  Using the RPM of avifile doesn't seem to be an option, as I get
fatal exceptions (presumably it was compiled with SDL found, and since
avifile CAN'T find mine...)

Are you SURE you have also headers (probably SDL-devel) ?
