Have you removed config.cache file in avifile directory before new
excution of configure
Are you sure you have installed them into you default $PATH ??
Is it pkg-config executable from your path ?

Well mostly you need to do nothing as these win32 codec aren't that
much useful nowadays - except you would like to watch/listen WM9 movies/sounds
Otherwice all commonly used codecs are mostly properly being decoded
by ffmpeg pluging.
If you want to use them - just download various sets of win32 libs
- either from avifile sf page or from the mplayer homepage

If you are using some linux distro - make sure you have libsdl-dev
package installed. Otherwise if you are installing packages yourself
make sure sdl-config could be found within your $PATH - or give
it as an argument for configure.
(And again - if you install new package on your system - don't
forget to remove config.cache file before configure!)
Also NOTE - without proper SDL installation avifile is mostly
useless as all the video output is made through SDL library.
