It seems like a bug because that code wouldn't execute properly. I'd step through it in gdb (in assembly), and watch as it decremented a register, then a few instructions later reloaded the register with the previous value. Now that I'm no longer in '103 compatibility mode (thanks again for that tip), it doesn't seem to happen.
Is this your entire program, or might there be an interrupt handler that's trashing one or another registers or memory locations?
