IIRC, this feature should already be in avrdude. At least I remember testing
it on the Windows platform some time ago.

Can you please add your patch to the Patch Tracker at the avrdude web site
on Savannah? Emails have a tendency to get lost. We'll take a look at the
patch and see what's going on.
