That brings up a second question: are there any guidelines how paranoiac to be with checksumming of data in eeprom?

Reread-verify after download is an evident necessity - one extreme; I certainly will not checksum what I write to RAM, the other extreme. Between these extremes, where situate EEPROM writes? The reply is certainly hardware/manufacturer specific - how reliable are writes to internal eeprom of an Atmel processor?
