I'd recommend just grabbing a Teensy(++) (2.0 only, the 3.0 is ARM).
It's got USB programming, HID code examples, and if you want to you can
use his Arduino IDE patches to treat it as such. It's an Atmega32U4 or
AT90USB1286 depending on the board.
