I'm using gcc-3.4.4 with avr-libc-1.2.5 . I tried gcc-4.0.1 but the
result with the 'big file' was bigger
than with gcc-3.4.4.
Anyway, with any compiler you'll get the problem that functions not
being defined 'static inline' have
to be provided to external callers.
