Had a look at simulavr's man page, which shed some light. Seems that simulavr must be started manually, before gdb, and made to listen to a TCP connection from a GDB server: I tried: $simulavr -g -p 1000 -d atmega16 ...then only start GDB and it connects to simulavr via TCP on port 1000. then miracle, insight came to life and I could run and step into my program.
