Follow-up Comment #5, patch #6530 (project avrdude):
Attached is a new patch following your suggestion.
The new patch has some slight drawbacks, however. It duplicates some code and
makes control flow less obvious.
I have also submitted another, similar patch #6750, which avoids these
problems by creating a new programmer-id.
I prefer patch #6750
