Follow-up Comment #1, bug #40142 (project avrdude):

You are certainly right that adding a sanity check there is 
a good idea.  Anyway, it only masks the real problem: this 
situation is not supposed to happen.

I cannot reproduce this in any way.  What is your input data? 

It displays a "Reading" message.  Do you know which memory 
region it belongs to, does it already crash when trying to 
read the signature?

Try running with -vvv, that might give us some better idea 
what action is being performed by the time it crashes.
