this question may sound silly, but I did not find documentation on it.
So, how do you actually take a schema written in JSON and have acro
create classes for it?

I figured it out. For the record and the next guy typing this question  
into a search engine:

The download directory contains a jar named "avro-tools-1.3.2.jar".  
That can be used via "java -jar avro-tools-1.3.2.jar compile" to  
compile an avro schema into java classes.
