Hey guys, Just released a project using Away3D: http://www.cocacola.com.br/happyme/(developed by Gringo - www.gringo.nu).
It could be quite hard to understand the website if you don't speak portuguese, but basically, you can create your own avatar and customize it by interacting with the wheel found at one of the six hotspots (few hotspots are related to your geo-information [Brazil only]). Arrow keys to control the character, space-bar for top-view. You can also click on the icon at the top-right to print your avatar as a papertoy or create a wallpaper. Anyway, Away3D was definitely the best option and as soon as I have time I will write a technical post trying to explain the problems I had: clipping, performance in different browsers/wmodes, collada animation in separated files (http://tinyurl.com/bhcc3r), collada bones interpolation and memory management (even though most of those items are improved and better in the latest Away3D version). Thanks!
