Hi,
You have 3,000+ polys rendered per frame, and 6,000 total. That is pretty
much the maximum in regular Away3D.

One thing that may speed it up a bit is quality="MEDIUM" or "LOW", when
something is moving, and back to HIGH when it stops.

You can perhaps also try Away3Dlite, since you are maxing out the # of polys
Away3D should be able to handle at a fast rate :)

About question #2, I don't think children are supported in MD2, since it is
just one mesh after all.
