Thanks Tarwin, especially for the insights on Max.  I would normally
prefer Max because I'm already familiar with it, and I've heard that
the learning curve on Maya is pretty steep, but I definitely need good
solid animation support.  I've used Max for animations in Shockwave3D
and the caveats there are that you need to group the biped with the
mesh, and usually people make that group a child of a dummy to make
movement easier.  Also I agree, this stuff should hopefully end up in
the Wiki someday, but at this point I don't feel qualified to write it
yet.
