As to which format is best I will only make my evaluations once molehill and Away3D 4 is out of alpha/beta. There has been talk in this group about which is best already try a search on the google group for it and it should show you quite a few threads of which is more appropriate for still models, vs loading, vs parsing, vs best for animation etc. For me it's a big ? for now at least.
The loading of other formats is not that much different, there are examples of them included in the Away3D 4 Broomstick examples folder (see Away3D SVN > Trunk > Broomstick > Examples).
