I've the impression the tutorial is a bit out of date, although I
haven't follow it so I can't really comment on that.

According to your description of the problem, I guess that you did not
disable Awesome systray, therefore you end up having some applications
which need systray (such as network-manager) being registered in a
non-GNOME systray, that maybe you don't see at all.

*If* that is the cause of your problem, you can fix it by simply
avoiding creating a systray, or by avoiding creating a wibox
alltogether. My rc.lua doing that---with which I've no problem using
network-manager with Awesome+GNOME---is linked from
