I have this also, sometimes I can't even switch to tty1. But I get this when plugging/unplugging the HDMI cable without disabling the output first thru xrandr. I've always associated the lockups with the video driver. Maybe it's GTK/awesome? Do you still get response from mouse movement and caps/num lock keys (keyboard leds toggling)?
