It's not awesome that would be dimming them, but the compositor. I've been
dimming mine via compton for a while (https://github.com/chjj/compton),
before that I had compton turn them semi-transparent but that got
distracting. Here is the string I use in my .compton.conf for this:

inactive-dim = 0.5
