After the patch for the GtkFileDialogPeer is committed I can also

Since the fix has just been pushed to the awt repository, I think that
makes sense to incorporate the required changes right into your current
patch that introduces the GtkFileDialogPeer. Also, please apply the
suggestions outlined by Damjan in [1].
What about directory-only selection in FileDialog? Also in this case,
I can provide already a patch for the GtkFileDialogPeer (but not for
the other OSs).
I don't think we're ready for that fix yet. We would really want this
implemented on all supported platforms at once.
