This answer is yes

3. If it is possible to add a new project grouping?

Create a new class which extends ProjectNode. EASY!
When you try and create a new project, the first time it is very
slow. The reason for this is that the system searches for all
classes which extend the class ProjectNode.

1. Yes it can be done.

2. use treeNode functionality.

treenode is a system class used for traversing the AOT and has a lot
of useful functionality. The product builder uses this very well to
dynamically create classes and methods! it's used a LOT if you know
where to look, search for treenode.

I think the classes you need are called projectNode and
projectListNode. Look under system documentation\classes\ to see the
definition of these

To get you started, search for treenode in the AOT and this will
give you lots of examples on how to create nodes, and methods in
inside notes etc. you should see lots of nice examples.

Here is an example of where projectListNodes are used, it might get
you on the right track.

public static WebProject construct(WebApplicationName wn,
ProjectSharedPrivate shared, boolean run = false)
{
    ProjectListNode webProjectListNode;
    WebProject wp;
    ProjectNode webProjectNode;

    // Initialize the Web Project
    webProjectListNode = infolog.projectRootNode().AOTfirstChild
();                  // private projects
    if (shared == ProjectSharedPrivate::ProjShared)
        webProjectListNode = webProjectListNode.AOTnextSibling
();                        // shared projects

    webProjectNode = webProjectListNode.AOTFindChild(wn);

    if (!webProjectNode)
        return NULL;

    if (run)
        webProjectNode.AOTrun();

    wp = webProjectNode.loadForInspection();

    return wp;
}
