I am not able to help you with a "recommended" number of journal lines.
 
However, we recently imported data into Ax3.0 SP3, and we in fact did split up the journals in chunks of 2.000 lines. This worked just fine.
 
Our first attempt was to import 25.000+ lines, but that just took forever (=we killed the import)

Sorry to bother everyone but I cannot find old postings that discuss the max number of journal lines recommended in a journal.

Can someone help direct me to the posting or provide me the info (I thought there was some fix issued to split up the posting also…), I am doing some data imports for Axapta v3.0 SP2
