Workflow is not intended to increase the productivity of the AX software system, but rather the productivity of the organization that REQUIRES approvals for some processes. AX can now handle the approval process.
For example, without workflow in the software, the purchase requisition process would need to be done outside of the software and only after the paper trail gets all approvals does a purchase order get entered into AX. Now purchase requisitions can be entered by people and AX alerts the approvers. It is more efficient for the organization. A similar example would be submission of expense reports which need to go through an approval process. Now that is part of the AX 2009 software.
