Have you tried to use precompiled GCL? On Linux I regulary use
such method:
GCL=/path/to/gcl ../wh-sandbox/configure
There is a little catch: last time I chcecked build did not work
with ANSI version of GCL. But gcl-2.6.7 and 2.6.8 worked fine.
